JANE’S Experience

Recipe – Ricotta Stuffed Shells w/a Mushroom Wine Sauce
Ingredients – mushrooms, white wine, ricotta, onions, garlic and more.
Calories – 500-800 per serving (serves 2)
Price – $28.00
Cooking Level – Easy (for beginners)

Pros

  • It was great that I didn’t have to come home and think “What’s for dinner?”
  • The dish was something I had not made before and was very eager to try.
  • All of the ingredients were measured out, neatly packaged and ready to cook.
  • Food delivery to home or office is a huge plus.
  • All ingredients are listed on the instruction pamphlet, which is perfect for someone who might be allergic to something.
  • The stuffed shells were AMAZING and made me feel like a Top Chef!

Cons

  • There were not any labels on the food, which would have been nice when trying to sift through the ingredients to find what to add to my dish next.
  • The instruction guide noted it would take 20mins to prepare the dish but it instead took me 40mins.
  • The dish was just enough for two people but not enough for leftovers. (Pardon my fat girl with in…she likes to eat)
  • More detailed instructions for ingredients. For example, how to remove thyme to cook it. I only knew how remove the thyme properly for cooking because I had seen it done on a cooking show. Had I not seen that I would have thrown the whole stem in the saucepan.
  • I would have liked to know measurements of ingredients. Why you ask? The wine in my box spilled out on my way home because the box tipped over. While I still had some wine left if I had known the exact measurement, I could have just replenished what was lost. Instead I guestamiated and hoped for the best.

Overall Impression of Dish

While this is my first dish from Scratch DC (I intend to try others) I really think their whole operation is quite genius! Scratch DC has recognized that these days being a young professional means a long work day in addition to a long commute home. Having recognized our plight Scratch DC has simplified the meal planning process by allowing us busy DMVers to have access to a home cooked meal instead of otherwise stopping at Chipotle on the way home. The other thing I loved about this is I really felt like I was cooking on a “Top Chef” type of level. I think it’s a great way to try something new and experiment with different foods you otherwise might not have. And, the two cookies at the end of which I was very skeptical about heating my oven up for were literally the BEST chocolate chip cookies I have EVER had!

ANN’S Experience

Recipe – Moroccan Chicken with Tomato, Almond & Zucchini Couscous
Ingredients – chicken breast, zucchini, lemon, and a marinade and more.
Calories – 500-800 per serving (serves 2)
Price – $27.00

Cooking Level – Easy (for beginners)

Pros

  • They deliver to places outside of the downtown “DC” area. That means those of us that live in Maryland and Virginia can benefit from this service. You’ll have to enter your Zip Code on Scratch DC’s website to confirm if they deliver to your area.
  • The ingredients for the dish arrive in a well-organized box.
  • All of the ingredients look fresh and ready to cook. Everything comes pre-chopped and measured, so all you have to do is cook!
  • The instructions are presented in a fun and easy way. I never once was confused about what I should be doing next. In fact, I found the instructions to be complete and thoughtful of those customers who are inexperienced!
  • They throw in cookie dough!!! You can’t go wrong with cookies for dessert, right?

 Cons

  • The individual ingredients lacked labels. It’s true that an almond is an almond, but my dish came with a small container of oil. I’m not sure what type of oil it was. It could have been olive oil or something else entirely.
  • The cooking time (in my opinion) is not entirely accurate. Not counting the time required to marinade my chicken, it took roughly 45 minutes before my chicken was completely cooked on my stovetop.
  • The cooking instructions, although clear, may not take into account that not all stovetops are created equal. For example, the instructions for the Moroccan chicken dish states that we should let our pan sit over medium high heat for 3 to 4 minutes before placing chicken in the pan. Then, we are to cook our chicken over medium high heat and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until chicken is brown. That’s precisely where I almost ran into trouble because my pan was so hot that it browned my chicken in less than a minute on each side. Then, I had to turn my burner down to ensure that I did not burn the chicken.

Overall Impression of Dish

I’ve only tried the Moroccan chicken dish, but I found the food to be very flavorful and really made me feel like I had accomplished something at the conclusion of cooking this dish. One of the better things I’ve taken away from this experience is the desire to experiment more with couscous because I never knew it could taste so good! Scratch DC’s dish has also given me the perfect way to whip up a meal for friends and family who I plan to invite for dinner over the weekends. Heck, this might make me seem like an even better cook than I already am!

ANN+JANE Overall Scratch DC Impression
