Safe Places to Take Your Child for Halloween

When I was growing up, Halloween was a time to be carefree and dress as your favorite cartoon character or go for the safe choices (princess or witch). I can walk up to any house or any stranger and accept candy without fear of being poisoned or critically injured because some psycho put a razor blade in my candy. But alas, these are the challenges the kiddies today face, so I wanted to offer some safe alternatives for taking your little one trick or treating this Halloween:

District of Columbia

WHEN: Sunday, October 26, 4 pm

EVENT: NSO Family Concert: Halloween Whodunit

This is the 3rd annual Spooktacular concert series where kiddies can come decked out in their creepiest and original costumes and enjoy music as guests investigate a whodunit mystery.

AGES: Kids ages 4-12

This is a super safe environment to bring your kids for some Halloween fun. According to the Zoo’s website, there are nearly 40 treat stations, animal demonstrations, keeper chats, and decorated trails, which is perfect for the entire family. There are always plenty of snacks from the regular trick or treat goodies to some more wholesome choices for unreasonable sensible parents watching their kid’s sugar intake. Costumes are welcomed and encouraged.

MARYLAND

WHEN: October 27th

EVENT: PUMPKIN HARVEST & FESTIVAL

PRICE: Harvest Days: $7 for adults and children, kids under 1 are free; Pumpkin Festival: $11 per person, kids under 2 are free.

Families are invited to take part in a number of autumn activities, including the straw maze, hayloft, a hayride, and of course picking pumpkins!

This place has 7-acre of corn maze. There’s also a smaller “Jack and the Cornstalk” maze for kids. Fall festival runs through November 2.

EVENT: Halloween Haunt at Kings Dominion,

Kings Dominion hosts its annual frightfest for all the ghouls and goblins in the DMV! Kids can go on rides and even take part in some haunted reenactments! Costumes are welcomed.

EVENT: Trick-or-Treating at Mount Vernon

The historic Mount Vernon is offering a special opportunity to trick-or-treat at George Washington’s estate. And for more adventurous trick-or-treaters there is a scavenger hunt stopping at 12 locations.
