Lactation Cookies

If you’re fortunate enough to be a breastfeeding mom – meaning your child has finally figured out how to latch properly, your nipples are so tough you no longer feel a thing, and you have maintained the patience to allow them to continue, then this post is for you! For lactation to continue smoothly while breastfeeding you have to maintain proper nutrition, not stress, relax, be rested, and remain healthy and physically fit, which all sounds good out loud but as I am in the throws of it, its dang near impossible! But, have no fear because to maintain your milk supply there are a host of options to get your milk flowing of which lactation cookies are the most popular.

These days, lactation cookies are available everywhere from Babies R Us, your local grocer to online. While I did not have a problem maintaining my milk supply I did want to increase it so that I could pump more for when my son was going to start daycare. The three key ingredients in these cookies are the flax-seed, oats, and brewer’s yeast all of which have milk-producing properties which aid in lactation. If you’re really having a hard time maintain your milk supply then consider adding fenugreek, a known lactation aid, to this recipe and you will be in for a big boost but it shouldn’t be used before trying other methods first.  I made this lactation cookie recipe a few times to figure out the right balance of ingredients so these cookies will taste more like a sweet treat. Also, if you’re not a fan of chocolate chips, feel free to add whatever you like to the cookies such as nuts, raisins, white chocolate chips etc.  Either way, these lactation cookies are super easy and yummy so make a batch and let me know your thoughts!

Ingredients
  1. 1 cup of butter room temperature ( 2 sticks)
  2. 1 cup of sugar
  3. 1 cup of firmly packed brown sugar
  4. 2 tablespoons of water
  5. 2 tablespoons of flax seed meal (don’t skip this step, and no substitutions!)
  6. 2 eggs
  7. 2 teaspoons of vanilla
  8. 2 cups of flour
  9. 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  10. 1 teaspoon of salt
  11. 3 cups of old fashion oats
  12. 1 cup of chocolate chips
  13. 4 tablespoons of brewer's yeast
Instructions
  1. 1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. 2. Mix the flaxseed meal and water and let sit for 3-5 minutes.
  3. 3. Cream the butter, sugar, and brown sugar.
  4. 4. Add eggs and mix well.
  5. 5. Add flaxseed mix and vanilla, mix well.
  6. 6. Whisk together flour, brewer’s yeast, baking soda, and salt until thoroughly mixed.
  7. 7. Add dry ingredients to butter mix.
  8. 8. Thoroughly stir in oats and chocolate chips.
  9. 9. Scoop onto greased baking sheet, approximately 1” balls. Or roll into 1" balls with hands.
  10. 10. Bake for 12 minutes.
  11. 11. Allow cookies to set for a few minutes before removing from tray.
  12. 12. Enjoy!
Notes
  1. Feel free to add whatever add ins you like ie. flaked coconut, walnuts, pecans, white chocolate chips etc.
