Many families in the Washington Metro Area struggle with feeding their families for the Thanksgiving holiday. So, this year for our Thanksgiving A+J Give Back Project, we worked with SOME (So Others May Eat) to provide Thanksgiving Baskets for ten local families in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. SOME is an interfaith, community-based organization that exists to help the poor and homeless of Washington D.C.. They meet the daily needs of the people they serve with food, clothing, and health care. Their goal is to break the cycle of homelessness by offering services, such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness. The work that SOME does commendable and we were excited at the opportunity to work with them.
To prepare our Thanksgiving baskets we sent out a call to action on our various social media platforms for donations for the ingredients and materials we would need for our baskets. Fortunately we were able to raise $100 thanks to the generous donations of family, friends and our readership which supplemented the cost of the supplies. To all of those who donated, we want to say: Thank you!
With the $100 donation and A+J contribution the Thanksgiving baskets included ingredients for a complete thanksgiving meal to include: turkey, mac and cheese, green beans, candied yams, mashed potatoes, and other essentials to make a traditional holiday feast. We delivered the baskets the Monday November 24, 2014 so that they could be distributed to local families. Overall, we were very happy with the success of our Thanksgiving meals and glad to give back to families this Thanksgiving holiday.
Dedicated to giving back to the community, A+J will continue giving back during the Christmas Holiday and year round.
